Western Digital has announced that it has started to ship the world's first ultra-slim 5mm 2.5-inch WD Blue HDD and solid state hybrid drives (SSHD) aimed for use in slimmest devices and space-constrained environments.
Western Digital started to ship its 2.5-inch 5mm thick WD Blue with 500GB of storage capacity to its OEM partners and distributors. Spinning at 5400 RPM, the new WD Blue 2.5-inch 5mm WD5000MPCK HDD will feature 5mm thick body that, according to WD reduces weight by up to 36 percent compared to standard 9.5mm HDDs and also uses Edge Card technology and Edge Card connector that maximize mechanical sway space and uses new SFF SFF-8794 edge connector that actually receives both power and data from SATA interface connector.

Unfortunately, Western Digital did not reveal any precise details regarding the 2.5-inch 5mm WD Black SSHD other than it is currently shipping to OEMs and integrators so we'll have to wait a bit for that one.

The 5mm 2.5-inch WD Blue WD5000MPCK on the other hand is shipping to distributors and OEMs in 500GB capacity and should be available pretty soon with a suggested retail price of US $89.00. The WD Blue 2.5-inch 5mm drive is covered with a limited two-year warranty.
