Apple apologises for Butterfly key failures on MacBooks

Almost one year ago, Apple released new MacBook systems with third generation Butterfly keyboards. The main difference between the second and third generation was a small silicon membrane placed above each of their keys. This addition was supposed to make keys quieter than their predecessors.

The original version of the keyboard had an unusually high failure rate and Apple revised it in the 2017 MacBook Pro. According to AppleInsider, that model had fewer failures but there were still enough problems that Apple decided to include it in a keyboard repair program.

The problem was likely caused by dust that was interfering with the butterfly mechanism. During the last year, the company has added a membrane to a third-generation design. The membrane was supposed to reduce typing noise, but media discovered that was a protection from dust. Now, the company has admitted that the problem still exists, as reported by Joanna Stern at the Wall Street Journal.

It's hard to say when Apple will definitely fix the issue.
We are aware that a small number of users are having issues with their third-generation butterfly keyboard and for that we are sorry. The vast majority of Mac notebook customers are having a positive experience with the new keyboard.
