microSD Express is fastest memory card for mobile devices

Up to 985MB/s of transfer rate

Last June the SD Association announced SD Express, an incredibly fast SD card standard that was able to cover PC's PCI Express bus with speeds up to 985MB/s. However no one adopted it and the SD Association has tried again applying the same spec to the much more popular microSD card form factor: microSD Express.

The SD Express standard should have succeeded since it was able to provide pretty fast transfer rates. However most of the laptops and smartphones adopt microSD which is more compact. With the microSD Express, we have a microSD card that can hit a bandwidth of 985MBps. Since it uses just one PCIe lane, we could see in future even faster microSD Express cards supporting Gen4 and Gen5 specifications.

The upcoming microSD Express cards are covered by the SD7.1 spec, in other words a phone or laptop that includes SD7.1 microSD card support should be fully compatible with the microSD Express specification. At the moment there aren't SD7.1-compliant laptops but we hope we'll see during next months.
