High-end X399 motherboard

Today, we have a received some goodies from ASUS. With the X399 ROG Zenith Extreme motherboard, ASUS adds a high-end motherboard compatible with AMD Threadripper processors. Meanwhile we have done some pictures and during the next days we will test the motherboard with our Threadripper 2990WX processor.

The X399 ROG Zenith Extreme is an E-ATX form-factor motherboard with a total of eight DIMM slots, which you get due to the quad-channel memory interface Ryzen Threadripper ships with. Apart from that there is the "Aura" feature, which allows you to change the illumination of the board from within Windows. There are also four full-sized PCIe slots with metal-reinforcement, one PCIe x4 slot and one PCIe x1. Between the first and the second full-sized PCIe slot there are two slots distance leaving plenty of room for graphics cards to breathe even in multi-GPU configurations.

On the storage side we see the ROG DIMM.2 adapter that can be equipped with two M.2 SSDs. The adapter card also comes with a mounting mechanism for a 50mm fan to prevent M.2 drives from thermal throttling. Furthermore there is space for two M.2 SSDs under the detachable chipset heatsink cover. Since this cover features thermal padding, at least one M.2 SSD might benefit from this heatsink. In addition there are six SATA 6Gbps ports, one U.2 port and a USB 3.1 front panel connector. Looking for additional features we find onboard buttons and a debug display, support for USB 3.1 and a high-quality power design.

The CPU is powered by an 8-phase VRM and in order to prevent overheating issues, ASUS installed a 40mm fan next to the secondary heatsink. Looking at the external connectors placed directly at the I/O-panel, ASUS equipped the X399 ROG Zenith Extreme motherboard with eight USB 3.0 ports and two USB 3.1 Gen2 ports. Furthermore there is one Gigabit Ethernet port and the analogue audio panel with optical out as well as a WiFi module with two connectors for antennas.
