First look at AMD X399 2nd generation motherboards

Two new models

In a few days, AMD will official release the second generation of Threadripper processors. As you might know, this CPUs are compatible with first generation of motherboards. At the moment only MSI and Gigabyte have released new motherboards, the other manufacturers have just updated their BIOS or added cooling kit for the power delivery.

Like we have mentioned above, there isn't a new wave of AMD motherboards. At this time we have spotted only two new models that we have seen in previous leaks. We are talking about the Gigabyte X399 Aorus Extreme and MSI X399 MEG Creation.

The X399 Aorus Xtreme is based on an E-ATX form factor featuring RGB backlighting underneath each heat sink and there are steel reinforcements on the PCIe slots. Storage wise we find six angled SATA ports. Apart from that you get three M.2 slots allowing the installation of differently sized SSDs. Furthermore the motherboard sports a rather thick backplate which should improve the overall stiffness. At a first glance this is certainly a good looking motherboard.

With the X399 MEG Creation, MSI adds a E-ATX high-end motherboard with four full-sized PCIe 3.0 x16 slots and one PCIe x1 slot. In addition we find eight angled SATA ports and two M.2 slots allowing the installation of differently sized SSDs.

Both models come with two Ethernet LAN ports, WiFi antenna and several USB 3.1 ports. At the moment we haven't any detail about the price but since the launch is right behind the corner we will know more during next days.
