Today AMD has officially released their budget-oriented B450 chipset, offering low-cost alternatives to the company's high-end AMD X470 chipset. The B450 chipset should still offer interesting features like 24 PCIe Gen3 lanes, AMD StoreMI technology and DRAM/CPU OC.


With the B450, AMD doesn't offer just an updated version of its predecessor B350 chipset. This time AMD has done a couple of improvements like the new form of hybrid storage called StoreMI. With StoreMI, AMD allows user to migrate from a single HDD or SSD to a SSD/HDD combination by adding a second drive. Enabling this feature you can create a volume across both drives.

For example you could pair your SSD boot drives with a high-capacity HDD. In this way, StoreMI will move all the frequently-accessed files to the faster drive in order to improve important operations like boot and program loading times. According to AMD, StoreMI will draw a maximum of 1-2% of the CPU's work capacity, depending on the CPU model. AMD has also confirmed that the current AM4 socket will support CPUs until 2020.

This means that B450 (and older AM4 motherboards) will support AMD's upcoming 7nm Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000) processors when updated to a supported BIOS. AMD is going to offer a tremendous amount of forwards compatibility in constrast with what we can usually see with Intel.
