Samsung has announced the first 8 gigabit LPDDR5 DRAM chip, raising data rates up to 6.4Gbps-per-pin. The mass production is still rather far away, but this new chip should improve artificial intelligence technology in smartphones in a couple of years.


It looks like that Samsung is working hard on memory chips lately. Last year the company has rolled out its 16Gb GDDR6 DRAM chip and a few months later we have seen the first 16Gb DDR5 DRAM chip as well. Now with the LPDDR5 DRAM chip, Samsung unveils another memory chip based on 10nm class process. According to Samsung the new chip can deliver up to 51 GB/s which means up to 14 FHD movies at 3.7GB each.

In addition the new chip should provide a better power efficiency compared the previous generation. The upcoming LPDDR5 DRAM chip can hug "deep sleep mode" which should reduce power consumption by up to half of LPDDR4(X) in idle mode. Furthermore the voltage will be not fixed anymore but might change with the workload. According to latest rumors, we might see LPDDR5 DRAM chips already in the next generation of smartphones.
