As you might know, AMD is rebranding its FreeSync 2 technology to FreeSync 2 HDR. Since the FreeSync 2 is compatible with HDR technology AMD decided to do this change. Althought this might have sense, at the moment there is a lot of confusion over the specifications since AMD is basically slapping the HDR badge on existing FreeSync 2 display.


During an interview on PC Perspective, senior marketing manager at AMD Antal Tungler claimed that FreeSync 2 is compatible with Vesa DisplayHDR 600 certification. However this statement isn't completely right since FreeSync 2 monitors are only DisplayHDR 400 certified. In other words, the HDR badge might sound misleading. In a statement provided to Techpowerup, AMD said that FreeSync 2 HDR display might fall short of the DisplayHDR 600 certification.

The Display HDR 600 requires a demanding set of specifications. The peak luminance requirement is set to 600 cd/m2 and sustained bright scenes must have at least 350 cd/m2 of brightness. The DisplayHDR 600 color-reproduction spec is also more exacting than the entry-level certification. For example, compliant monitors must cover 99% of the BT.709 color space and 90% of the DCI-P3 space.

According to AMD, FreeSync 2 HDR display should be able to hit 400 and even 600 nits, but might not meet VESA's other requirements for a DisplayHDR 600 badge.
