JEDEC unveils Universal Flash Storage version 3.0

Two times faster than previous version

Solid State Technology Association JEDEC, has unveiled the Universal Flash Storage version 3.0 specification. Accoding to JEDEC, the UFS version 3.0 will offer up to twice performance increase over the previous generation. In other words, the UFS 3.0 will hit up to a theoretical speed of 2.9 GB/s.

With the UFS 3.0, JEDEC introduces the first standard with MIPI M-PHY HS-Gear4 and a data rate of up to 11.6 Gbps per lane (23.2 Gbps over two lanes). Furthermore it delivers twice performance increase over the M-PHY HS-Gear3 as used in UFS 2.1. UFS 3.0 is expected to be deployed in smartphones and in automotive applications.

The new standard will function at an extended temperature range and includes a host control mechanism for improved device data reliability. The temperature range and temperature event notifications will be a great add for the automotive application. In addition, UFS 3.0 will require less power to operate.

Since the MWC 2018 is right around the corner, we might see some mobile device makers mention UFS 3.0.
