RAMBUS starts discussing DDR5 and HBM3 specifications

Still need several years

A few days ago, RAMBUS started unveiling its early specification for DDR5 and HBM3 memory. If you have just updated your PC with DDR4 memory, you should not be worried about another upgrade. It will take many years before we see DDR5 modules on the market, but we already have some early specs. The main focus will be on getting higher performances and better efficiency.

According to a report from Computerbase, development on DDR5 RAM and HBM3 is underway. For example, the next generation of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) will boost transfer rates up to 4 GT/s, which is a big step forward compared the current HBM2's 2 GT/s transfer speed. HBM3 will be developed on the 7nm node, for this reason they will need a lot of years before being put in production. At the moment HBM2 is developed on the 14nm node.

DDR5 memory is said to be significantly further in development but they are aiming for the 7nm node again. Since we are in the 10nm age right now, they still need few years before we will see upcoming DDR5 memory. According to latest rumors, the upcoming DDR5 memory will offer up to 6400Mbps bandwidth, which is twice the current DDR4 bandwidth.
