NVIDIA's new GPU architecture revealed

Expected for GTC 2018

A new report suggests NVIDIA is working on a new GPU architecture which will be available next year. According to Heise.de, NVIDIA's new architecture will come with the codename Ampere and will succeed Volta. However Volta will be used for enterprise-grade products like artificial intelligence, cloud computing and datacenter, while Ampere should be used in next generation consumer-grade graphics cards.

Why Ampere? Well, NVIDIA has named their GPUs after well-known scientists. For example Maxwell (GTX 900 series) and Pascal (GTX 10 series) GPUs are named after James Clerk Maxwell and Blaise Pascal respectively. Ampere could be named after Andre-Marie Ampere, who is one of the pioneers of electromagnetism. According to Heise.de, the new NVIDIA Ampere GPU architecture will make its debuts at the GTC 2018.

It will be interesting to see what Ampere GPUs will be capable of when they will be released. We expect to see more performance and efficiency. Furthermore is still unclear how NVIDIA will name this new series. NVIDIA could continue with the four-digit model number scheme however it's unclear if they will use GeForce 20-series or GeForce 30-series for upcoming Ampere. We will surely keep an eye on it.
