Intel MCM with Coffee Lake and Vega pictured

Intel CPU sitting right next to AMD GPU

We’ve read numerous rumors on this subject in the past but lately Intel finally confirmed that multi-chip modules with Coffee Lake CPUs and AMD Vega GPUs are going to happen. Meanwhile the first pictures of these implementations have surfaced on the Twitter account of tech website Bits’ n Chips.

The image shows a rather large MCM where to the left the Intel Coffee Lake die is located, in the center there is the AMD Vega GPU and to the right we find the HBM2 stack. In between the CPU and the GPU there is a so called Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB), which allows for building this kind of modules. The Vega chip is going to be manufactured using 14nm node technology.

Currently it looks like Intel is going to make use of these modules in embedded solutions as well as in upcoming notebooks by the beginning of next year. Judging by the size of the AMD Vega die it looks like the GPU could pack a decent punch. Therefore the chip could be capable of running “not so demanding” games smoothly at FullHD (1920 x 1080) resolution.
