AMD has had two amazing years and the current 2017 is even better due to the big success of Ryzen and Ryzen Threadripper processors. With this two platforms, AMD is now catching up on Intel especially in the retail market. While on the CPU side AMD is becoming stronger, what about their GPUs?


A few months ago, AMD released their Vega GPU architecture which was the first consumer graphics card to feature HBM2 technology. However the cards are short since it’s been released to the public. Nevertheless, according to TweakTown, AMD is already heavily working on "Navi", which is their next generation GPU and it’s supposed to launch in July-August 2018. Before that AMD should actually launch a refresh of their Vega-based GPUs in order to keep up NVIDIA's GTX 10 series cards.

Meanwhile NVIDIA is close to launch their GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, which is supposed to compete with the Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics card. As always, NVIDIA will rely on a their numerous AIB partners to flood the market with custom graphics cards as well. Since the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti should hit a price tag below $400 US this implies quite some pressure on AMD’s Radeon cards.

At this time there is only little information available regarding Navi. What we know for sure is that Navi will be made using 7nm process technology. Like with Ryzen and Ryzen Threadripper, Navi could come with modular GPU dies that should be easier to create. With a modular GPU die the package would be significantly smaller compared to the massive GPU dies, which are currently being manufactured.
