Microsoft is giving Windows 10 S users more time to make the free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. The free upgrade period is now set to close on March 31st next year, which is three months after the previously announced ending date. Windows 10 S devices are pretty limited and slow compared to the ones running the normal version of the operating system.



Unlike Windows 10 and Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 S doesn't let people install apps that are not available in the Windows Store. Therefore a lot of software can't be used. Should you own a Windows 10 S based device and you missed this free upgrade opportunity, you will have to pay $49 US to get the Pro version after March 31st 2018, which will give access to the massive library of Win32 applications. Windows 10 S doesn’t allow the installation of applications like Photoshop or Steam and therefore using the OS for professional use or even some casual gaming is not possible.

On the other hand, that same limitation gives Microsoft more control over how smoothly its OS runs. By locking down the OS to not allow the installation of power hungry applications Microsoft can ensure a smooth experience in combination with a good battery life. Nevertheless we believe this is too drastic a step.
