The Chinese hardware site PCEva is spreading the rumor that Intel's lineup might become even more confusing during the upcoming moths. Intel's next generation Coffee Lake CPUs won’t work with existing socket LGA1151 motherboards despite the fact that they’re sharing the same socket.
A few days ago, ASRock confirmed over Twitter that the upcoming CPU series won’t be compatible with Z270 chipset based motherboards. Although the tweet has been deleted, the information was also confirmed by Tom's Hardware. According to PCEva, Coffee Lake will require an Intel 300-series chipset based motherboard, which is currently also known as the Kaby Lake Refresh (KBL-R) platform. At launch Intel might have six Coffe Lake-S ready and afterwards the gaps are going to be filled with Kaby Lake Refresh CPUs. According to the slides, the upcoming CFL-S chips will become available during Q4 this year while the full lineup will be completed in Q1 2018.
Assuming this information is correct, the flagship Coffee Lake-S CPUs is going to be the Core i7-8700K which will sport six cores with twelve threads as well as a base clock of 3.70GHz. The upcoming Coffee Lake-S CPUs should pack 802.11ac Wave 2 and Bluetooth 5 support however this will only work on the Cannon Lake platform. Furthermore, the slides seem to indicate that Intel will not update the X299 platform in the the first half of 2018.
