MSI unveils X399 Gaming Pro Carbon

First MSI X399 motherboard

During Capsaicin SIGGRAPH 2017 event, several manufacturers have shown their upcoming AMD X399 motheboards and MSI has shown their first X399 motheboard. Unlike the Gaming Pro Carbon based on the Z270 chipset, this upcoming model belongs to the vendor’s high-end products. It packs several M.2 and PCIe slots.

The X399 Gaming Pro Carbon AC is based on an ATX form factor featuring RGB backlight underneath each heat sink and there are steel reinforcements on the PCIe slots. In general the layout concurs with today’s de facto standards for high-end motherboards and therefore there are four full-sized PCIe 3.0 x16 slots and two PCIe x1 slots for instance.

Furthermore we find eight SATA ports but only six of them have been angled. Apart from that you get three M.2 slots allowing the installation of differently sized SSDs. The first M.2 slot is placed in the middle of the motherboard and it’s compatible with 2280 units (80mm), the second one is in the bottom area and it supports 22110 (110mm) SSDs, while the third is placed in the bottom part of the motherboard and is compatible with 2280 units (80mm) again. Furthermore all slots feature the new M.2 Shield which should help preventing your SSD from thermally throttling.

Due to a previous leak, we know what external connectors are placed directly in the I/O-panel. MSI equipped the X399 Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard with one PS/2 port, eight USB 3.0 ports and two USB 3.1 Gen2 ports. Furthermore there is one Gigabit Ethernet port and the analogue audio panel with optical out as well as a WiFi module with two connectors for antennas. According to the latest rumors, MSI could launch the X399 Gaming Pro Carbon alongside AMD's market-launch of the Ryzen Threadripper processors, which is slated to happen August 9th.
