It looks like the guys over at Nordic Hardware have received word from a retailer about the pricing of AMD’s upcoming Radeon RX Vega cards. According to them those cards are supposed to sell for 7000 SEK, which is approximately $850 US. Not included in this price is VAT, which will make those pixel accelerators even more expensive.
If the current rumors regarding performance are correct a $850 US price tag - VAT excluded - would be quite a blow. Since the Radeon RX Vega appears to perform a little bit better than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 we’d expect a price tag somewhere in the ballpark of $600 US to $650 US.
Should AMD’s RX Vega graphics card really launch with a price tag north of $850 US and should they really “just” outperform NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1080 by a little bit and not dethrone the GTX 1080 Ti, then AMD’s graphics department might be in trouble. In the end the cards simply wouldn’t be worth the money. On top of that it looks like the RX Vega cards also aren’t going to be the most energy efficient pixel accelerators ever to be launch, which would make the whole launch even more difficult.
Nevertheless we’re still hoping that AMD is going to deliver a well-performing product at a competitive price tag. In the past AMD has always priced its products attractively, which is why we take this bit of information with a bit of salt.
