MSI has added two GeForce GTX 1080 Ti with custom design to their portfolio. The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Lightning Z and X are the new flagship models, when it comes to pixel accelerators from MSI. Both models have been created for performance and extreme cooling enthusiasts, being equipped with a triple-fan cooler. Apart from that there is a new lighting system which allows you to change the color of the LEDs. In other words, the Lightning graphics cards are not black and yellow anymore. The two models are almost identical, the only difference is a small bump in clock speeds.


As we already mentioned the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Lightning Z and X are equipped with a custom PCB as well as a new cooler. Both cards are supposed to deliver excellent performance. While the GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition works at 1480MHz/1582MHz Core/Boost frequencies, the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Lightning Z clocks with 1607MHz/1721MHz Core/Boost and the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Lightning X clocks with 1569MHz/1683MHz Core/Boost. Both cards feature profiles with different clock speeds: silent, gaming and lightning mode.

On the connector’s side of things we find the usual three DisplayPorts 1.4, one HDMI 2.0b connector and one dual-link DVI port. Since all the latest MSI motherboards have been equipped with an armada of LEDs for RGB lighting, both cards also feature several LEDs on both sides. Apart from that there is a solid backplate. The MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Lightning cards have a whopping three 8-pin power connectors, which is usually an indicator, that this card has been built for extreme overclocking. With the three 8-pin power connectors as well as the 75W from the PCIe slot, the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Lightning Z can pull a total of 525W.

Both graphics cards are now listed on Geizhals. The MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Lightning Z is set to 949 Euro while the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Lightning X is available for 929 Euro.
