According to a new report from Passmark, AMD supposedly made significant progress in recapturing market share from Intel during the last few months. Looking at Passmark's CPU usage graphs, which have been created from benchmarks completed using its software, we see that in Q4 2016 only 17,8% of the tests were done on AMD hardware. At the moment, 26,2% of the tests are completed with AMD platforms and Ryzen CPUs.
However this chart doesn't prove anything when it comes to market share. Best case it implies that AMD could possibly have sold more processors, but there is no direct connection to actual sales numbers. There are simply too many unknowns in this equation to jump to that conclusion. Since the graphs are based on the submissions, they just show that there have been more AMD submissions during the past few months. Apparently, there could be a correlation between an increase in submissions and an increase in market share, but a correlation is not a linear dependency as it’s been suggested by other sources. So far it’s a fact, that on Amazon.com, the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 processor is the second best selling CPU and since the list is updated on an hourly basis it’s quite possibly rather accurate. Nevertheless, this fact from Amazon, at best, suggest a correlation towards market share and as long as there are no hard number or as long as there is no hard evidence we’re not concluding anything here at ocaholic.
