By the end of July Crytek is going to launch their CryEngine with version 5.4. By then it will finally support the Vulkan API. Vulkan support was already expected to be rolled out with version 5.3, however Crytek has preferred implementing other features first and improve on DirectX 12.
Crytek is using GitHub for their development as well as their versioning. Therefore there is the possibility for other developers or enthusiasts to follow the different developmental stages and track the different changes over time.
As you might know Crytek is licensing it’s game engine out to quite a few game studios. Apart from that the CryEngine has always been known to allow game designers to create stunning looking in-game visuals. But hand in hand with stunning visuals go high hardware requirements. Since some engines appear to perform better with the Vulkan API it will be interesting to see how upcoming titles will run comparing the DirectX 12 and the Vulkan API.
On example that Vulkan can allow for well-performing game engines is Bethesda's 2016 Doom remake. Especially in combination with lower-end CPUs and graphics cards which are based on AMD's GCN architecture saw a benefit from the Vulkan API.
