HP adds two new Omen desktops to gaming family

Right before the Electronic Entertainment Expo

HP has announced a refresh of its Omen gaming lineup including new laptops, desktops, external graphics docks as well as peripherals. The new desktop family includes an Omen X and an Omen gaming PCs. While the first one features a compact, almost small form factor design, the second one looks more traditional.

The Omen X is an evolution of the VR backpack concept that we have seen during last year. According to HP, the new Omen X is a powerful desktop that’s also portable to a certain extent. In other words, you can use it as a normal gaming PC or you can add the extra backpack accessory kit and wear it on your back as a mobile VR PC. The backpack kit packs two hot-swappable batteries and includes a docking station that adds charging functionality. At the moment there isn’t any information about the battery life in combination with the VR backpack, but on the other hand they are not talking of "extended" VR sessions. The VR experience should be pretty solid since the Omen X packs a GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card and an Intel Core i7-7700K processor.

If you prefer a more traditional gaming PC, HP also offers the Omen. This gaming PC appears to be a fairly standard tower PC with HP Omen design. According to HP site, you can build your Omen Desktop with an Intel Kaby Lake Core i5 or i7 CPU or you can equip it with an AMD Ryzen CPU. Regarding the graphics card department, inside the HP Omen you can install up to two Radeon RX 580 or two GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. Furthermore the HP Omen will offer PCIe SSDs and liquid cooling options with overclocking controls.

According to HP, the Omen X Compact Desktop will become available next month with prices starting at $2'500 US and the backpack accessory kit would add another $600 US to the bill. Meanwhile the Omen Desktop is already available with a starting price of $900 US.
