It looks like AMD and Intel are competing head to head with high-end desktop platforms at this year’s Computex. During the show, ASUS has unveiled the first AMD X399 motherboard which is compatible with the upcoming AMD Threadripper processors. According to the name this new model belongs to the high-end series.
The ASUS ROG X399 Zenith Extreme motherboard, features the new AMD TR4 socket, eight DDR4 DIMM slots along with a fifth DIMM.2 slot which supports up to two NVMe M.2 drives. On the storage side we find a single U.2 port and six angled SATA ports. Furthermore there are four full-sized PCIe slots with steel reinforcements, one PCIe x4 slot and one PCIe x1 slot.
At the moment we have only one picture at hand but we might add more in the next days. According to the first rumors, the ROG X399 Zenith Extreme includes the latest SupremeFX audio. Power is provided through two 8-pin connectors along with a 24-pin ATX connector. Looking for additional features we find a debug display, support for USB 3.1 and a good mix of connectors at the I/O panel. So far ASUS has not announced the official pricing of this motherboard or its release date.
In a little bit another context, we’re really hoping that AMD is going to shed some more light on the upcoming Threadripper chips such as pricing and maybe even release date.
