Id Tech 7 Engine optimized for Ryzen 7

Better support for more threads

In an interview with AMD, Robert Duffy - CTO at id Software - has mentioned a few details regarding AMDs latest Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 CPUs. Robert has been talking about optimizing the next id Tech engine towards AMDs Ryzen processors.

So far one of the main issues is with game engines is that most of them only support a limited core/thread count. Since AMDs latest Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 processors comes with either 6/12 or 8/16 cores/threads a lot of potential remains unused.

During the interview Robert is painting the picture that the upcoming version of the id Tech engine (Version 7) should address this deficit allowing for higher frame rates and/or more complex AI.

With their Ryzen patch, Studio Oxide has already shown that the performance of Ashes of the Singularity can be boosted by better optimizing the code towards the new AMD processors. In this particular case Studio Oxide went down the path to come up with optimizations for one single game. Changes to the id Tech Engine, which is used by a multitude of titles would affect lots of upcoming games and therefore be a very efficient way of optimizing code towards AMD Ryzen processors or generally make engines benefit from more cores/threads.
