Intel X299 combined with 12-core chips

Firing back at AMD?

Judging by the sheer number of rumors, that are surfacing these days around the upcoming Intel high-end desktop processors, we’re closing in on the launch of these new parts. This time it’s again Benchlife who reported that Intel will launch Skylake-X parts with up to 12 cores.

So far the rumor mills were only talking about hexa, octa and 10-core chips, which would be ready for launch day. According to information that appear to originate from an Intel presentation the launch of Skylake-X and X299 will include 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12-core processors.

Taking such a step Intel could be counteracting AMD’s current and future portfolio. From an Intel standpoint a 12-core processor could certainly help to put AMD through its paces. On the other hand: we haven’t seen an HEDT lineup from Intel with this many different SKUs, which could be an indicator that the chip giant is actually a little bit worried about being overtaken performance and portfolio wise.

On another note the leak doesn’t just show the information that Intel is also going to launch a 12-core chip, it also mentions the introduction date. It appears that Intel has chosen May 30, 2017, to present their new chips. Choosing this date is no surprise since it’s the first day of this year’s Computex Expo in Taiwan.

As we already mentioned several times at the beginning of this year, 2017 is definitely an interesting period for the hardware industry with AMD finally back stepping on Intel’s toes.
