AMD Vega might arrive on February 28

During GDC 2017

Through its “evenbrite” portal AMD has just announced that it will be holding a special live streaming event during the upcoming Game Developers Conference on February 28. The company has not yet mentioned Vega specifically, however we know that AMD has a developer sessions scheduled at GDC to talk specifically about Vega and architecture optimizations. Furthermore during AMD Ryzen should be launched at the same time.


During the last GDC show in March 2016, AMD has showed details of their Polaris graphics architecture, which is the fundament of their RX 400 series graphic cards. Since AMD Vega might be launched soon, we’d expect to see something similar this time. Vega is going to be AMDs next generation of high-end graphics cards and based on 14nm process technology. Apart from that there are countless architectural optimizations and overall it’s going to be a big step forward for the company in general. According to recent rumors, the performances of this new chip might be in the ballpark of NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1080.

While the Ryzen CPUs are expected to become available during the first week of March, the Vega GPUs are officially slated for release in the second quarter of 2017. Maybe NVIDIA is going to counter the AMD launch with yet another card such as the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, which should basically be a cheaper and downscaled version of the Nvidia Titan X Pascal which, at the moment, can be found for 1028 Euro on Geizhals. The Titan-series has always been geared towards professional users, while the Ti’s feature set purely addressed gamers. Going back in history there was for instance the GTX 780 Ti which was a cut-down version of the Titan Black and the GTX 980 Ti which was based on the Titan X.
