During the past months we have seen a decline on the price of DDR4 memory. Especially in the period from summer 2015 to summer 2016 the decrease was almost constant month over month. Lately, however, the prices have risen again and according to the latest rumors it will continue for few more months.
Since Ryzen and Cannonlake are right around the corner you might want to consider buying new DDR4 memory. In addition there are several games that work better with 16GB DDR4 memory like for example Battlefield 1. According to a rumor from Nanya Technology the prices could go up more during the next few months.
For example, we noted in October that prices had jumped, going from a steady 80 Euro for a 2x8GB kit to 110 Euro or more. According to Geizhals a kit of Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-2800 had gone from around 78 Euro (August 2016) to about 121 Euro (January 2017). If the prices will keep growing at some point will hit the launching price which was around 140 Euro more than one year ago.
Nanya Technology is planning to transition to a 20nm manufacturing process and this will cause a reduction of its 30nm wafer production. In addition if you own a high-end smartphone it’s almost certainly equipped with DDR4 memory. Apparently for the foundries this continuously increasing demand means good business and the simple fact, that high-end smartphones nowadays come with DDR4 memory increased the demand for DDR4 chips massively. During the next months Samsung is expected to launch its next flagship device Galaxy S8 which might effect to the DRAM pricing as well.
If you are thinking about buying new DDR4 memory for your system we suggest to do it as soon as possible, since prices are most likely to rise more.
