Intel delays 3D XPoint memory modules

Coming with 2nd generation Purley platform

Although Intel's 3D XPoint memory modules were expected with the launch of Skylake EP server CPUs and the new Purley server platform in the first half of next year, it appears that the launch has been delayed and support for such modules will be coming with later, with the 2nd generation Purley platform.

Introduced over a year ago and started sampling early this year, Intel's new 3D XPoint memory which sits between DRAM and NAND won't be coming as soon as we hoped as newest information suggest it will only be supported with the 2nd generation Purley platform and not the first generation coming in H1 2017.

According to a report from Motley Fool, Intel has delayed the introduction of 3D XPoint memory modules. Expected to be supported on Intel's upcoming Purley server platform and Skylake EP server CPUs but that does not seem to be case.

A recent statement from Intel's CEO, Brian Krzanich, saying that "there will be a second generation of Purley that includes 3D XPoint," suggests that 3D XPoint memory modules will launch with the Cannonlake EP server CPUs, currently scheduled to launch sometime in late 2018 or early 2019.

This does not bode well for Intel, which reported a record revenue last quarter but should influence Intel's further financials due to a big disappointment in the DRAM market, which could be worth up to US $34 billion by 2020.

Hopefully, we will hear more about Intel's 3D XPoint memory soon as it surely looks like a new big thing in memory market.
