Western Digital joins consumer SSD market

Unveils WD Green and WD Blue SSDs

After completing its acquisition of SanDisk, Western Digital has now joined the consumer SSD market with two new SSD lines that are practically re-branded Sandisk SSD lineups, the WD Green SSD and WD Blue SSDs.

The WD Blue and WD Green SSD will both be available in 2.5-inch SATA and M.2 2280 SATA form-factors and use Sandisk's 15nm TLC NAND.

The WD Blue SSD lineup will be available in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities and it is practically a re-branded Sandisk X400 SSD, with some firmware changes. The WD Blue SSD will be using Marvell's 88SS1074 controller with Sandisk's 15nm TLC and offer sequential read and write performance of up to 545MB/s and 525MB/s (540 and 500MB/s for the 250GB version).

The 4K random read and write performance peaks at 100K IOPS and 80K IOPS (97K and 79K for the 250GB version) and it has an endurance rating of 100TB, 200TB and 400TB TBW for 250GB, 500GB and 1TB version. As noted earlier, this one will be available in both 2.5-inch 7mm and M.2 2280 form-factors, both with SATA interface.

The new WD Green SSD will be available only in 120GB and 240GB capacities and uses Silicon Motion SM2256S controller with the same Sandisk 15nm TLC NAND. This is pretty much the same SSD as the earlier available Sandisk SSD Plus and should offer significant performance improvement compared to the HDD while maintaining the lowest possible price.

It provides sequential read and write performance of up to 540MB/s and 405MB/s for the 120GB version and up to 545MB/s and 435MB/s for the 240GB version while the 4K random read and write performance peaks at 37K IOPS and 63K IOPS for the 120GB and 37K IOPS and 68K IOPS for the 240GB version.

It has a somewhat lower power consumption, which is probably why WD made it a part of its "green" lineup and has an endurance rating of 40TB TBW for 120GB and 80TB TBW 240GB version.

Both the new WD Blue SSD and WD Green SSD lineups will be backed by a three year warranty. The WD Blue SSD lineup should launch soon with a price set at US $79.99 for the 250GB, US $139.99 for the 500GB and US $299.99 for the 1TB version. The WD Green SSD lineup will be available sometime later this quarter but unfortunately, the price is yet to be announced.
