According to the latest set of rumors, it appears that AMD has scored yet another major win as its new 14nm Polaris GPU might be a heart of the upcoming Playstation 4K.
Codenamed NEO, the new Playstation 4K or the Playstation 4.5, depending how you want to call it, will get an updated custom APU which will feature 14nm Polaris GPU with 36 Compute Units (CUs), which adds up to 2304 Stream Processors.
The CPU part will have eight Jaguar cores clocked at 2.1GHz while the GPU will end up clocked at 911MHz.
The GPU specifications line up with the earlier details Polaris 10 Ellesmere GPU, which is rumored to be behind the upcoming Radeon R9 480 graphics card. The rumor also suggest that the GPU will have 8GB of GDDR5 memory connected via 256-bit memory interface.
The higher CPU clock and an improved GPU, which brings double the amount of Stream Processors compared to the original Playstation 4, could provide an impressive performance boost for the new Playstation 4K.
The new Playstation 4K will also give developers an ability to upscale 1080p games to 4K/UHD resolution and improved hardware should be able to cope with higher resolution and keep the FPS at the same level.
The same source also suggest despite hardware improvements, there will be no significant changes with the Playstation 4K and it should be similar to the original one.
It is still early to talk about the price as we still do not have a precise launch date but the source did suggest that it could hit retail at US $399.
