AMD announces three new embedded CPUs

Based on Jaguar+ and Excavator cores

AMD has added three new SKUs to its embedded G-series product lineup that will be based on Jaguar+ or Excavator CPU cores.

The flagship SKUs added will be a part of AMD's new J- and I-family of G-series embedded SoCs which will be based on up to two Excavator x86 cores and two or four AMD Compute Units, adding up to 128 and 256 Stream Processors, respectively.

The new J- and I-family of SoCs, known under Prairie Falcon and Brown Falcon codenames, will be based on FP4 package that AMD already uses for its R-series, Merlin Falcon, SKUs and aimed at users that do not want the performance of the R-series but still need more than what the low-end offers.

Both the J- and I-Family will offer 4K x 2K H.265 10-bit Decode & Multi-Format Encode/Decode, HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.2 and eDP 1.4 outputs, dual-channel DDR4/DDR3 support, integrated AMD Secure Processor and, most importantly, 10-year longevity, something that is quite important in that part of the market.

The J-family will feature up to two Excavator CPU cores with two AMD Compute Units, packing 128 Stream Processors as well as a 6 to 10W TDP. The I-family provides a bit more GPU performance and will feature up to two Excavator CPU cores, four AMD Compute units, packing 256 Stream Processors, as well as a higher 12 to 15W TDP.

The low-end of the lineup is the new G-series LX-family SoC which features two Jaguar+ cores and a single AMD Compute Unit, with 64 Stream Processors and 6-15W TDP. It also comes with a single-channel DDR3 memory support, has Multi-Format Encode/Decode and same HDMI 2.0, DP 1.2, eDP 1.4 outputs and 10-year longevity.

The G-series LX-family is aimed at industrial controls and automation, military and aerospace and networking and communications infrastructure applications and markets.

According to AMD, the initial batch of G-series J-family and I-family SoCs should already be available to OEMs and other customers with mass availability expected in the first and second quarter of this year while the LX-family will be available in March.
