AMD has launched a new and a rather interesting CPU which will be based on the latest Excavator CPU architecture, the Athlon X4 845.
As revealed earlier, AMD's Excavator CPU architecture will not bring any significant performance improvements but rather focus on improving the efficiency of the Bulldozer architecture and although previous reports suggested that the Excavator architecture will only be available for APUs, due to its 15-35W design power targets, it appears that AMD changed its mind, releasing the new quad-core Athlon X4 845 CPU.
Featuring two Excavator modules with four threads, 2MB of L2 cache and working at 3.5GHz base and 3.8GHz Turbo clocks, it is obvious that the Athlon X4 845 is not a performance part but rather focused on office and similar workloads, where graphics is not a big deal, especially since PCIe 3.0 lanes are limited at x8. It is also possible that AMD is reusing APUs with disabled integrated graphics and pushing the CPU frequency higher in order to re-purpose it as a desktop chip.
AMD will bundle the new Athlon X4 845 with the new 95W Quiet Thermal Solution CPU.
It is also obvious that the Excavator CPU architecture will not be big on the desktop market as AMD is preparing its newest Zen CPU architecture which should also bring the new AM4 platform.
