It appears that AMD's Zen architecture could be available earlier than previously expected, as it could launch its AM4 platform in March 2016.
While previously expected to be available in Q4 2016, according to
a latest report from Planet3DNow, AMD could launch its new flagship AM4 platform in March 2016. There have been plenty of rumors regarding AMD's upcoming Zen CPU architecture so this news is quite exciting.
The AM4 platform will bring plenty of improvements and will support both APUs and CPUs, or precisely, AMD's Bristol Ridge and Summit Ridge platforms. The Bristol Ridge are AMD's upcoming mainstream APUs based on Excavator CPU architecture, while the Summit Ridge will be AMD's high-end FX-series CPUs based on Zen architecture. The Bristol Ridge APUs will be based on the 28nm manufacturing process, have GCN GPU architecture and come in quad-core design, while the Summit Ridge CPUs will be based on the new 14nm manufacturing process and will be available with up to eight cores.
The new AM4 motherboards will also bring plenty of new improvements compared to AM3+ motherboard, including new I/O capabilities as well as support for DDR4 memory. The report also suggests that AMD's AM4 platform board have been completely redesigned as these are meant to last much longer than previous platforms and have support for future AMD processors.
Bear in mind that these are still rumors so should be taken with a grain of salt but we certainly expect that AMD can deliver on its promises and we will finally have a chance to see that impressive Zen CPU architecture in action.
