Sony wants 90 fps as a standard for virtual reality

60 fps as a minimum

Virtual reality (VR) is definitely the next big thing in gaming and while most manufacturers agree that 60 fps is a minimum for VR gaming, Sony is pushing hard to make the 90 fps a standard.

Although many users feel a certain discomfort and nausea even at 60 fps, it appears that Sony thinks that a higher framerate and higher refresh rate will counteract the effects of motion sickness and any other side effects from VR. According to Sony, the difference between movement in real life and movement in the game has to be as low as possible so delay between the action and visual response is critical, so high framerate is not an optional thing.

On the other hand, Playstation 4 will have a hard time running high frame rate on VR headsets and while Oculus and HTC/Valve are pushing the similar thing, these VR headsets have PC to power them while Playstation 4 is already struggling with 1080p 60 fps games.

According to the latest details, Playstation VR headset uses 1920x1080 resolution, split to 960x1080 for each eye and can run at 90Hz and 120Hz. This gives it a lower resolution compared to 1200x1080 on HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift but higher refresh rate. Unfortunately, Oculus Rift has much higher PC hardware requirements which show that you need a hefty system to run virtual reality at high refresh rate, something that Playstation 4 lacks.

Next year will most likely be the year of virtual reality, when Oculus and HTC headset finally become available for consumers.
