Earlier last month, Nvidia has announced its Mobile Geforce GTX 980 graphics card meant for high-performance notebooks and while performance sounded quite impressive on paper, we now finally have some of the first benchmarks which compare it to both mobile and desktop graphics cards.

Now that some notebook manufacturers have released their first notebooks based on Mobile GTX 980 beast, we can get a full look on the performance that it offers. Since the Mobile GTX 980 is a fully enabled GM204 Maxwell GPU with the same specifications as the desktop GTX 980 graphics card, you are looking at 2048 CUDA cores, 128 TMUs and 64 ROPs.

The Mobile GTX 980 has a 125W to 150W TDP, which is configurable by OEMs, and uses a special MXM PCB board with 4- to 8-phase VRM. In order to keep the TDP in check, Nvidia cherry-picking GM204 GPUs for the Mobile GTX 980, which also allowed it to maintain the same clocks as on the desktop GTX 980, 1126MHz for the base and 1218MHz for the GPU boost clock.




Computerbase.de managed to get a hold of XMG U726 Ultimate Gaming notebook with the Mobile GTX 980 GPU, Core i7-6700K CPU, 16GB of DDR4-2133 memory and Samsung 850 1TB SSD, all placed in a notebook with a 17-inch FHD screen with G-Sync. The testing shows that the Mobile GTX 980 does throttle down to an average of around 1076MHz but the performance results are still great for a notebook, as it offers performance similar to the GTX 980, which means it is better than most desktop graphics cards, except for both AMD and Nvidia highest-end GPUs.




Notebookcheck.net on the other hand, had a few other notebooks on hand and compared the results to some of the fastest mobile GPUs, including the multi-GPU configurations like the GTX 970M SLI, GTX 980M SLI and AMD's M395X. Their notebook with the Mobile GTX 980 is Clevo's P870DM with Core i7-6700 CPU, 32GB of DDR4-2133 memory and Samsung's SM951 512GB PCIe SSD.




The benchmark results show that the only faster solution are the GTX 980M SLI and GTX 970M SLI configurations, with GTX 970M SLI beating it by a minor 2 percent margin. Of course, you also get all the SLI issues.

In any case, the Mobile GTX 980 from Nvidia, or GTX 980 Notebook as it is somewhere called is an impressive beast and it will bring ultimate performance to the notebook market but it will also be limited to specific notebook models where manufacturers can make a cooling solution that will keep both the high-end CPU and the high-end GPU in check.
