Microsoft unveils Lumia 950 and Lumia 950XL

PureView camera and liquid cooled high-end SoCs

During its Windows 10 event in New York, Microsoft has unveiled its two new flagship Lumia smartphones, the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL.

While earlier rumors were pretty much spot on when it comes to specifications of the new Lumia smartphones, Microsoft had a couple of new things to show, including the fact that both smartphones have liquid cooling, something that Microsoft already used on its Surface tablets and the new Display Dock for Continuum, which turns your smartphone into a small computer, providing all the inputs and outputs, all thanks to the USB Type-C port.

The bigger Lumia 950 XL packs a 5.7-inch 2560x1440 AMOLED screen protected by Gorilla Glass 4 and is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 octa-core SoC with four Cortex-A57 and four Cortex-A53 CPU cores, paired up with Adreno 430 GPU and 3GB of RAM. It also has 32GB of internal storage expandable via microSD card slot and a 3,340mAh battery. The Lumia 950 XL has 151.9x78.4x8.1mm dimensions and weighs 165g.

The smaller Lumia 950 features the same 2560x1440 resolution Glance and ClearBlack AMOLED screen but on a smaller 5.2-inch size, which leaves it with 564ppi of pixel density. The precise dimensions of the Lumia 950 are 145x73.2x8.2mm and it weighs 150g. The Lumia 950 is powered by Qualcomm's hexa-core Snapdragon 808 SoC with two Cortex-A57 cores four Cortex-A53 CPU cores, paired up with Adreno 418 GPU and 3GB of RAM. It also packs 32GB of internal storage and microSD card slot but has a smaller 3,000mAh battery.

Both the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL pack an impressive 20-megapixel PureView rear camera with 1/2.4" sensor, Carl Zeiss F/1.9 lens and 5th generation OIS. It can record 4K videos and has a triple-LED flash for better low-light pictures. Both smartphones also have a front 5-megapixel wide-lens camera but Lumia 950 does not have a LED flash at the front.

The rest of the features for both smartphones include Iris infrared scanner for Windows Hello, 802.11ac dual-band WiFi, USB Type-C port and support for Qi wireless charging. Both will, of course, run on Windows 10 Mobile OS which looks quite good on some of the first hands-on details.

The biggest news was the new Display Dock for Continuum. A small box that features USB Type-C port on one end and DisplayPort over USB Type-C, HDMI, two USB 2.0 and USB 2.0 high current charging port on the other side. This little, 64.1x64.1x25.6mm and 230g heavy box, will turn your Lumia 950 or Lumia 950 XL into a small computer thanks to Contiuum for Phones and Office apps.

According to Microsoft, the Lumia 950 XL will be priced at US $649 while the Lumia 950 will sell for US $549 when they become available next month.
