Samsung announces new 950 Pro M.2 SSD

First consumer V-NAND NVMe SSD

During the Samsung SSD Global Summit, Samsung has announced its new 950 Pro solid state drive, which uses both V-NAND flash memory as well as the new NVMe protocol with PCIe 3.0 x4 interface, promising some impressive performance.

The new Samsung 950 Pro SSD represents the transition from SATA-based to PCIe-based SSDs when it comes to consumer market. This is also a transition between standard 2.5-inch form-factor to the new and increasingly popular M.2 form-factor. The Samsung 950 Pro uses the same V-NAND flash memory seen earlier on the AHCI-based 850 Pro SSD.

The biggest update is the move from SATA interface to PCIe x4 interface which offer over 4GB/s of bus bandwidth. In the new 950 Pro, Samsung used its own UBX controller paired up with second-generation 32-layer V-NAND, which also suggest that we might see a new version that might come with third-generation 48-layer V-NAND which was announced earlier.

Due to the use of M.2 form-factor, Samsung's new 950 Pro SSD will be only available in 256GB and 512GB capacities but thanks to the aforementioned PCIe interface, offer sequential read and write performance up to 2,500MB/s and 1500MB/s for the 512GB version. The 256GB version of the Samsung 950 Pro SSD will be slightly slower at up to 2,200MB/s for read and up to 900MB/s for write sequential performance.

The use of V-NAND flash memory with PCIe interface and NVMe protocol support significantly improved 4K random performance so the new 950 Pro will offer up to 300K IOPS for read and up to 110K for random write performance on the 512GB version and up to 270K IOPS read and up to 85K IOPS write for the 256GB version.

The rest of the features and specifications for the new Samsung 950 Pro SSD include AES-256 encryption with support for TCG Opal 2.0. Both the 512GB and the 256GB version of the new Samsung 950 Pro SSD have same 1.7W idle power consumption, while average climbs up to 5.7W and 5.1W with burst power consumption of 7.0W and 6.4W respectively. The new Samsung 950 Pro also got a significant raise in endurance ratings compared to the 850 Pro lineup, so the 950 Pro 512GB version is rated at 400TB while the 256GB version is rated at 200TB.

The entire Samsung 950 Pro series is backed by a 5-year warranty and should be available in October, with a price set at US $199.99 for the 256GB version and US $349.99 for the 512GB version.
