Intel's new Xeon CPU to feature 28 CPU cores

Skylake-based Xeon CPU

Intel's upcoming Skylake-based Xeon CPUs for Purley platform will pack a total of 28 CPU cores as well as support for Hyper Threading, with a total of 56 threads.

According to a fresh report from Wccftech.com, Intel's Purley platform with Skylake CPUs will bring the biggest update since Nehalem based Xeon CPUs. The new platform will bring improved performance per watt but also have support for 6-channel DDR4 memory support, AVX 512 instruction set, 100G Omnipath interconnect Cannonlake graphics support and Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) support.

While we still do not have any details regarding specific SKUs, the platform will support up to 8 Socket integration, Socket P support, and feature SKUs ranging from 45W to 165W as well as 48 PCIe slots, configurable in x4, x8 and x16 modes, something that is also a big update.

The new 100G Omnipart interconnect is the biggest update for upcoming Skylake Xeon CPUs and Intel calls it Storm Lake (Gen 1). The new PCH will be codenamed Lewisburg and will also include an upgraded Ethernet controllers.

In any case, Intel's upcoming Skylake-based Xeon CPUs and Purley platform will bring some impressive things to server side with some rather impressive multi-processor setups.
