It was quite obvious back at CES 2015 show that 4K/UHD resolution is the "new 3D" and with various streaming services now offering content in 4K/UHD resolution, Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has now decided to finalize the specification for the new Ultra HD Blu-ray format.

According to press announcement, the Ultra HD Blu-ray specification will encode content in up to 3840x2160 resolution and bring improvements to both image and sound, including "delivery of a significantly expanded colour range and allows for the delivery of high dynamic range (HDR) and high frame rate content."

According to BDA exec, "The technical capabilities of Blu-ray Disc, in particular its significant storage capacity and high data transfer rates, will enable the delivery of an unparalleled, consistent and repeatable UHD experience."

Many agree that this might be the last major disc-based movie format and, as BDA will release the first licenses this summer, we should see some of the first Ultra HD Blu-ray discs and players sometime later this year.

According to details, the new UltraHD Blu-ray discs should hold up to 66GB and 100GB of data on dual- and triple-layer discs, respectively which is significant boost compared to 25 to 50GB of storage on currently available Blu-ray discs. Panasonic already showcased a prototype of Ultra HD Blu-ray player at CES 2015 back in January.
