Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), is preparing to start work on a new fab at its 12-inch wafer plant in central Taiwan in June and the company expects to mass-produce 10nm chip by mid-2016.
While earlier reports suggested that TSMC might start to mass-produce chips using 10nm manufacturing process by the end of 2016, it appears that the company has moved its plans ahead and should have the new Fab 15 facility ready for mass production in mid-2016.
The new 10nm manufacturing process will be aimed at mobile chips, server chips, graphics processors (GPUs), network processors, baseband chips and chips for gaming systems, according to TSMC.
Samsung is already putting a lot of pressure on TSMC as its 14nm manufacturing process is way ahead of TSMC's 16nm one and many customers have shifted their orders to Samsung.
In order to stay ahead in the game, TSMC will need to push hard for 10nm as Intel already have plans for the same manufacturing process and will be ready for it next year as well.
