AMD officially announces FreeSync

First reviews show up

AMD has now officially announced FreeSync, an adaptive refresh rate technology from AMD. The first FreeSync monitors have been listed in Europe for quite some time and are now coming to the US and we also see some of the first reviews of AMD's FreeSync technology.

In case you missed back when AMD was announcing it earlier, AMD's FreeSync uses variable refresh rate with Adaptive-Sync standard and pretty much syncs the refresh rate of the monitor to the frame rate of the graphics card.

We will not go into details as we already wrote a lot about both the AMD FreeSync as well as Nvidia G-SYNC technologies, which are pretty much the same thing, except that they work on different standard.

Since it is a combination of hardware and software solutions you will need three things in order for it to work, compatible AMD Radeon graphics card or APU, AMD FreeSync-ready monitor and the upcoming AMD Catalyst driver that supports it. The result should be a tear-free and stutter-free gaming.

When it comes to hardware, there are currently six AMD Radeon graphics cards that support AMD FreeSync, including Radeon R7 260, R7 260X, R9 285, R9 290, R9 290X and the dual-GPU R9 295X2. There are also six APUs that support it, including AMD A6-7400K, A8-7600, A8-7650K,, A10-7700K, A10-7800 and the A10-7850K.

There are also a total of 11 different monitors coming from Samsung, BenQ, LG, Acer and plenty of other manufacturers and these should be widely available soon, with some already selling.

There are also plenty of AMD FreeSync reviews from some of the usual sites, including PC Perspective, Anandtech, Tweaktown, HotHardware, Overclock3D and others, and most of them agree that AMD FreeSync does exactly what it should and does it right.

While some monitors are better or worse, depending on actual specifications of the monitor including refresh rate, it appears that AMD's FreeSync has a bright future and certainly offers a better gaming experience.
