Judging from the latest teaser from Corning, we might soon see the new Gorilla Glass 5, currently known as the Project Phire.
While Corning Gorilla Glass is currently protecting a bunch of smartphones on the market, it appears that Corning is currently working on a successor for its Gorilla Glass 4, currently known as the Project Phire. While the best bet is this will be the new Gorilla Glass 5, the company is keeping all the info under tight wraps and has only teased it during its investor conference held in New York.
While it did not go into specific details, Corning noted that the name came from the scratch resistance capabilities of Sapphire glass, which is not that good when dropped, something that has been a big problem for manufacturers. According to Corning, this is exactly where Project Phire will come in play and hopefully, we will likely see and hear details during MWC 2015, scheduled to kick off in early March.
During that same investors conference held in New York, President of Corning Glass Technologies, James Clappin said that: "We told you last year that sapphire was great for scratch performance but didn’t fare well when dropped. So, we created a product that offers the same superior damage resistance and drop performance of Gorilla Glass 4 with scratch resistance that approaches sapphire.”
In addition to the new Project Phire, Corning also discussed its Iris glass, a product that can help manufacturers build TVs as thin as smartphones and with minimal edges around the sides.
