Raspberry Pi 2 Model B now officially released

Quad-core SoC and 1GB RAM on board

Those that have been following Raspberry Pi will be quite happy that Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced the new Raspberry Pi 2 Model B that will feature a quad-core Broadcom SoC, 1GB of RAM and same price as the previous one, US $35.

While the previous Raspberry Pi model was powered by a single-core SoC clocked at 700MHz and paired up with 512MB of RAM, the new Raspberry Pi 2 Model B will be powered by a quad-core Broadcom BCM2836 SoC, based on four 32-bit ARMv7 Cortex-A7 cores, clocked at 900MHz and paired up with 1GB of RAM. This should make the new Raspberry Pi 2 Model 2 six times more powerful than the Raspberry Pi Model B+.

The power is not the only thing that the new Raspberry Pi model got as it now has expanded GPIO pins, advanced power management and connectivity, which now includes an ability to connect up to four USB devices, including powered devices like HDDs. The 40-pin GPIO also enables the new Raspberry Pi to support multiple sensors, connectors as well as expansion boards, while the first 26-pins are identical to the Model A and B boards, thus enabling full backward compatibility.

Microsoft has also announced its support for the new Raspberry Pi 2 and has announced that it will be delivering a version of Windows 10 that will support the new Raspberry Pi 2. It will be handing out that same version for free during Windows Developer Program for IoT and this will mean that you could get a full Windows 10 running PC for just US $35, the price of the Raspberry Pi 2.
