Nvidia skipping 20nm, goes directly to 16nm FinFET GPUs

Still no word on AMD

There have already been some rumors suggesting that Nvidia might skip 20nm manufacturing process for GPUs and go directly to 16nm FinFET one, and today, more information regarding the topic have showed up online.

According to the fresh report from Digitimes.com, TSMC is gearing up to manufactures Nvidia's GPUs on 16nm FinFET manufacturing process, which suggest that Nvidia will completely skip 20nm manufacturing process. On the other hand, it is very interesting to see that AMD is not on the partners list, suggesting that AMD might take a different approach.

The report coming from Digitimes.com shows that TSMC will be holding its annual suppliers conference on Thursday and AMD still might be on that list. TSMC will share some details regarding its 16nm and 10nm manufacturing processes and Nvidia is certainly on that list.

The 16nm FinFET manufacturing process has passed verification procedure and is now ready for development, with mass production scheduled for mid 2015.

If all goes well, TSMC should have 16nm FinFET GPUs ready sometime in Q3 2015, unless it hits some delays, of course.
