While there has been a lot of talk regarding DDR4 now that the Intel Haswell-E HEDT platform is about to official launch, the DDR4 mobile market will not be coming that soon. Today, JEDEC has announced the new JESD209-4 LPDDR4 standard which is aimed at low power devices like smartphones, tablets, notebooks and any other form of mobile device.
When compared to currently available LPDDR3, which peaks at 2133MT/s, the LPDDR4 starts at 3200MT/s and goes all the way to 4266MT/s. The DDR4 also got an architecture redesign, including moving from single channel die with 16 bits per channel to dual channel with 16 bits per channel, which brought double the speed.
The higher frequency is not the only big thing for LPDDR4 as it also lowers the voltage from 1.2V, needed for the LPDDR3, down to 1.1V. This will, of course, bring lower power consumption and thus longer battery life for mobile devices.
Of course, all we need now is manufacturers to adopt the new LPDDR4 standard and we see some of the first devices with it.
