During its 30 Years of Graphics and Gaming Innovation event AMD has officially announced its newest Radeon R9 285 graphics card, priced at US $249, which will be based on a new Tonga Pro GPU with 1792 Stream Processors.
As detailed earlier, AMD's R9 285 should replace the aging Tahiti PRo based Radeon R9 280 graphics cards and will be based on the 28nm Tonga Pro GPU which packs 1792 Stream Processors, 112 TMUs, 32 ROPs and a 256-bit memory interface paired up with either 2 or 4GB of GDDR5 memory. As it was the case with the Tahiti Pro R9 280, the Radeon R9 285 also needs 6+6-pin PCI-Express power connectors but has a slightly lower 190W TDP and a lower US $249 price tag.
The reference clocks for the Tonga Pro equipped R9 285 are set at 918MHz for the GPU and 1375MHz for memory but since most AMD AIB partners will come up with their own custom designs, you can expect these clocks to vary.
AMD directly aims at Nvidia's GTX 760 with the new Radeon R9 285 and claims that its graphics card ends up at up to 15 percent faster in Battlefield 4 at 2560x1440 resolution.
As expected, and judging from its price, the Radeon R9 285 is currently placed between the R9 270X and the R9 280X.
AMD is also expected to unveil the Tonga XT equipped R9 285X at a later date, most likely a month from today, which should feature a fully enabled Tonga XT GPU, with 2048 Stream Processors, 128 TMUs and 32 ROPs. Unfortunately, AMD is keeping the rest of the specifications under tight wraps.
