Secondo un nuovo report, AMD sfrutterà sia Samsung sia GlobalFoundries (GloFo) per produrre la nuova GPU Greenland.
According to a new report
coming from Korean ETNews.com site, Samsung has secured AMD as a newest customers and expects to start producing first chips for the company early next year. Earlier, GlobalFoundries (GloFo) had successful tape outs and been confirmed to produce multiple AMD products next year but it now appears that AMD will regulate the proportion of the chips made from either supplier depending on the yield and other various factors.
Citing industry insider, ETNews.com states that since Samsung and GloFo has the same IP for 14nm manufacturing, chips that are designed by AMD will be produced at both factories. This will significantly help AMD with production as it will give it an ability to have volume production and easily cope with high demand.
Earlier reports suggest that AMD's next-generation Greenland GPU will enter mass production in Q2 2016 and it should be based on 14nm FinFET LPP (Low Power Plus) process. The GPU is expected to be twice the efficient compared to the 28nm Fiji and provide plenty of performance improvements. AMD is expected to produce its Zen CPU architecture on the same process and the same source suggest that AMD might also split it between Samsung and GlobalFoundries.
The same source suggest that AMD went to Samsung due to disappointing yield issues at TSMC as well as low supply, while Samsung has been already successful in taping out 14nm chips and is already pushing hard to focus on 10nm, which should be ready in 2017.
