As expected and announced earlier, Samsung has unveiled its two new Galaxy smartphones at a dedicated Unpacked event, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note5.
While the design or the specifications have not changed much, at least not compared to the earlier launched Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge, there are quite a few surprises regarding availability as the Galaxy Note5 won't launch in Europe, at least not this year. Samsung decided to use the Galaxy S6 Edge+ as the new European smartphone while Galaxy Note5 will focus on the US and Asia markets.
The Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, compared to the original Galaxy S6 Edge, comes with a larger screen, more RAM and a larger battery. As noted, Samsung pretty much kept the original design of the Galaxy S6 Edge. The main change is the new 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with the same Quad HD resolution. It still uses the same Samsung Exynos 7420 chipset but with 4GB of RAM and it got a larger 3000mAh battery.
The rest of the specifications are also the same as the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus still has the same 16-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front camera, 4G LTE Cat.9, 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC and support for Samsung Pay.
The new Samsung flagship phablet got a slight name change as opposed to the Galaxy Note 4, the new phablet will be called the Galaxy Note5. It features a metal unibody, which means that the battery is no longer removable and it does not feature a microSD card slot but sticks to 64GB of UFS 2.0 storage.
It also uses the same 5.7-inch Super AMOLED screen with Quad HD resolution (2560x1440) as its predecessor, but has a narrower bezels and the new Galaxy Note5 is narrower, thinner and lighter when compared to the Galaxy Note 4. The precise dimensions are set at 153.2x76.1x7.6mm and it weighs 171g.
The new Galaxy Note5 also has the same rear camera as the Galaxy Note4, so you are looking at a 16-megapixel F1.9 main shooter with HDR and OIS. The front camera got updated to 5-megapixel while the battery got slimmed down to 3,000mAh, but it has embedded wireless charging.
What makes it a bit different compared to the Galaxy Note 4 is the fact it uses the new Samsung 14nm Exynos 7420 SoC with 4GB of RAM, which should both help with battery life and provide a bit more performance for the Galaxy Note5.
Both new smartphones from Samsung are expected to be available for pre-order today with a price set at around US $700 for the Galaxy Note5 32GB version, contract-free, and around
US $779.99 for the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus 32GB version, contract-free as well.
