Intel's 4.5W Haswell coming later this year

Y-series CPU for fanless tablets and hybrids

Intel has previously announced that it will have a 4.5W SDP (Scenario Design Power) SKU of Haswell and shed some light on it during its analyst briefing held yesterday.

Although it still did not want to talk about precise specs or the actual price of what appears to be a Y-series ultra low power CPU, it did note that these will be available in limited volumes later this year. With 4.5W SDP these will be aimed at fanless tablets and 2-in-1 detachables that most people now know as hybrids, or tablets with a keyboard dock.

In case you missed it earlier, SDP refers to Scenario Design Power, or according to Intel, a power draw during sustained workloads. While its TDP will be at around 11.5W, the SDP of the Y-series CPU will be 4.5W and 6W depending on the clock. In a table leaked before, we had a glimpse of clocks that stated that these will be clocked anywhere between 600MHz and 1.4GHz for the CPU and 200MHz to 850MHz for the GPU part with SDP ranging from 4.5W to 11.5W.

Intel notes that these will enables incredibly thin and fanless designs that will offer all day battery life and great performance.
