A while ago well-known overclocker Der8auer created a tool to delid Skylake (and other) processors. Now, with the Intel Core i9 chips, he managed to delid them as well using his new Delid Die Mate X tool. This time he focused on the current flagship, the Core i9-7920X.



Der8auer's post was actually intended to show the Delid Die Mate X tool where the suffix "X" stands for Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X CPUs. The tool is as simple as always allowing you to secure a CPU and then move the heat spreader away from the PCB by force. Basically you just have to place the CPU into to correct mold to then force the heat spreader off by tightening a large screw that is moving a razor blade forward.

Usually a CPU is being delidded to improve core temperatures. As long as the standard thermal compounds is applied the temperatures are higher. With a compound from Gelid or Thermal Grizzly you can achieve temperatures that are between 15 and 20°C lower. This can help improving overclocking capabilities in the case of air and water cooled systems. However Der8auer hasn't performed any tests yet.

Nevertheless it needs to be mentioned that delidding a CPU is always a risky task and it is not covered by the warranty plan when you buy any Intel CPU. If you’re willing to take the risk and delid your €1600 Euro CPU, the Delid Die Mate X is available on Caseking for €89.90 Euro.
