AMD's RX Vega 56 hit the market earlier this week, bringing Vega to a more affordable price while still offering solid performance. The RX Vega 56 is as quick as a NVIDIA GTX 1070. According to a post on the Chiphell forums, it seems to be possible to unlock even more performance. A user has successfully managed to flash the RX Vega 56 with the Vega 64’s BIOS, achieving a decent performance boost.
The user "KDtree", over the chinese Chiphell forums, has successfully flashed a Vega 56 with a Vega 64 BIOS. According to his tests, the flashed card is only two percent slower than the actual Vega 64 from off the shelve. This boost isn't achieved by unlocking more cores on the GPU, but the BIOS changes the clock speeds and the power target of the graphics card. With the stock BIOS, the RX Vega 56 comes with a boost clock speed of 1'471MHz and a memory clock of 800MHz.
Meanwhile, with the Vega 64 BIOS the boost hit up to 1'545MHz on the core and 945MHz on the memory. With some little overclock, the RX Vega 56 can even surpass the performance levels of its bigger brother. The user has performed some test on 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme. With the stock BIOS, the Vega 56 achieved 9'452 points, while with the flashed BIOS the card has hit 10'340 points. Just for reference, a standard RX Vega 64 scores 10'479 points.
If those results are correct, the RX Vega 56 may become even more popular due to this simple mod. Nevertheless since this is a BIOS modification, you should be aware that warranty might get voided.
